Your submission has been reviewed for its technical merits. A similar approach has already been considered or planned for possible implementation. The NHTSA web site does not readily provide fatality statistics by make and model. Interesting, we can get reports of sudden acceleration my make but not fatalities. This is probably not true. But apparently NHTSA does not want us to focus on how safe cars are, but rather to focus on why we should not buy Toyota.

However the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does publish reports of this kind. Here is a link I found:

http://www.iihs.org/sr/pdfs/sr4204.pdf

I looked this report over and it appears on casual inspection, that Toyota fatality rates for this period were at the low end of the range in each of the vehicle categories.

So why is the federal government sounding the Toyota alarm?

The conflict of interest argument now seems more plausible.John Aquinonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1531677956418172122.post-66667270942308217952010-02-22T20:32:42.193-08:002010-02-22T20:32:42.193-08:00Those statistics look bad taken in isolation but t...Those statistics look bad taken in isolation but there are some factors to consider:

1) What are the NHTSA fatality rates for these vehicles overall? If Toyota's are as safe or safer than other vehicles, is it reasonable to leave that point out in the discussion.

2) There is a clear interest of government in knocking down Toyota given its equity stakes in GM and Chrysler. Any report from NHTSA should at least acknowledge the appearance of a conflict of interest in its reports as a supposed seeker of the truth when its ultimate parent has a large financial stake in Toyota's competitors.John Aquinonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1531677956418172122.post-24891939210419744232008-11-19T12:07:00.000-08:002008-11-19T12:07:00.000-08:00See also http://pricetheory.uchicago.edu/levitt/Pa...See also http://pricetheory.uchicago.edu/levitt/Papers/LevittUnderstandingWhyCrime2004.pdf .Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1531677956418172122.post-67196203007260555862008-11-19T09:24:00.000-08:002008-11-19T09:24:00.000-08:00By the way, thanks for the correction on the banan...By the way, thanks for the correction on the banana and kitty litter issue.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11694014072568496620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1531677956418172122.post-43547422286450542092008-11-19T09:23:00.000-08:002008-11-19T09:23:00.000-08:00GAO-03-235T opined that "radiation detection pager...GAO-03-235T opined that "radiation detection pagers have limitations. DOE officials told us that they do not view pagers as search instruments, but rather as personal safety devices to protect against radiation exposure, and that the pagers have a limited range and are not designed to detect weapons-usable nuclear material. ... pagers are more effectively used in conjunction with other radiation detection equipment, such as portal monitors similar to what DOE is providing to Russia for use at its border crossings." Granted, this report is old and technology has improved, but, in your opinion, has technology improved enough for first responders to use PRDs as a sole source for a probable cause search? I understand that some police departments are considering this as a crime fighting tool.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11694014072568496620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1531677956418172122.post-51644340747811073522008-11-19T06:51:00.000-08:002008-11-19T06:51:00.000-08:00Bananas and kitty litter are only a problem with t...Bananas and kitty litter are only a problem with the very large portal monitors and cargo container detectors that are calibrated to detect very small changes in radiation level. PRD's are generally not sensitive enough to detect these small changes in radiation level. The real problem is that nuclear medicine patients are hot enough to trigger an alarm from a PRD. For the last few years these patients are provided with a document to keep them from being subjected to unwarranted searches.Tom Hazletthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01638670477628516320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1531677956418172122.post-22685223303095204532008-09-07T10:58:00.001-07:002008-09-07T10:58:00.001-07:00Thanks.
