Relative Risks of Transport Modes
Here are numbers of estimated fatalities per billion miles/trips/hours for various transportation modes. (Note that the "relative risks" are simply weighted averages relative to the car weighted average. Arguments can be made to use any of these metrics in order to gauge relative safety. Advocates of the various transport modes, of course, tend to pick the denominator that favors their mode of choice.)
